ChildFund believes that all children should be able to grow up free from the threat of abuse.
ChildFund operates in some of the poorest countries in the world. As a child development agency, we work to ensure that children can grow up in safe homes, free from the threat of violence. However, domestic abuse and violence against children remain serious problems in some parts of the world. If you want to put an end to child violence and help millions of children in need realize their full potential, sign the ChildFund Alliance petition to let the United Nations know that ending exploitation and violence toward children is a high priority.
A Widespread Problem
In some countries, a high number of children often face violence at home. The problem is so serious that almost half the world's population of children experience some form of physical violence before their eighth birthday. However, gathering reliable data can be challenging because of underreporting; also, many estimates do not include children who live in institutions or are homeless. These children can be at even higher risk of abuse.
The reasons behind child abuse and domestic violence are complex. Socioeconomic issues can be a determining factor in cases of child violence, as can gender, race, environment and ethnic origin. In some parts of the world, there is a correlation between poverty rates, unemployment and violence against children, making it challenging to identify a single risk factor.
Standing Up For Children
ChildFund believes that all children should be able to grow up free from the threat of abuse. In 2002, ChildFund International joined 10 other global organizations focused on children to form the ChildFund Alliance, which today has 12 members. Together, we have the opportunity to create joint initiatives — like this call for action — that can make a positive impact in the lives of children and families in need.
We have a window of time to show the United Nations and the governments of the world that ending child violence is an urgent priority. At present, the United Nations is deciding which issues will be global priorities beginning in 2016, when the current Millennium Development Goals conclude. We need your support to make sure that children's needs are included in these future goals.
Please sign the petition today and make your voice heard. Together, we can effect real change and protect children in need from violence and abuse, offering them the hope of a brighter future.
