Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, thousands of children have had the chance to emerge from poverty and lead fulfilling lives. When you choose to sponsor a child, you're doing far more than just providing him or her with the chance to go to school, access health care and eat healthy, nutritious food — you're investing in the child's future. For many of our sponsors, seeing how the children they sponsored have progressed and matured is one of the most rewarding aspects of the experience. Today, many ChildFund alumni have gone on to live successful lives.
Thiago grew up in a poor family in rural Brazil. As a young child, he moved from his family home to live with his grandparents. When he was 8, Thiago became involved with Projeto União, one of ChildFund's local partner organizations. Soon afterward, he was matched with a sponsor, a significant milestone that Thiago credits for his current success.
"Today, I know that the support I received — school material, financial help and medication — was of great importance in my life," says Thiago. "I now realize that the activities offered by the organization get children off the streets. The affection of the sponsors, shown by way of the letters or visits, spreads joy without end, making us feel special. This is very important."
Thiago, now 21, is a third-year medical student at the Medicina da Universidade Federal do Ceará and is working toward his dream of becoming a doctor so he can help those in need. Although hard work and determination have played a huge part in Thiago's success, the support he received from his sponsor helped put him on a path toward medicine.
Against All Odds
In Mexico, Jorge has a similar story. For many children living in poverty, the future can be uncertain, child sponsorship gave Jorge the opportunity to attain a business degree.
Jorge, whose parents worked hard but earned little income, was enrolled in the ChildFund sponsorship program after his mother got in touch with one of our local partners while looking for work. Jorge says that without the support and kindness of his sponsor, he may not be where he is today. An active participant in many of ChildFund's community initiatives, Jorge now holds a degree in business administration and can support his family.
"I was 6 years old, and I received support from very generous people living very far away," Jorge says. "I would like to thank the person who — with no other interest than to help — reached out and supported me while I was going through a rough time in my childhood."
Making Change Happen
Thiago and Jorge are just two of ChildFund's success stories. Thousands of children around the world have received a chance to succeed after being sponsored, and these children often remember the generosity of their sponsors for a lifetime.
Sponsoring a child is one of the best ways you can invest in a child's future. For just $28 per month — around $1 per day — you can help children who come from similar backgrounds to Thiago and Jorge emerge from poverty and give back to their own communities.
