Giovana is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her mother, Zilma, and with a sister, in a rural community located in the Jequitinhonha Valley, northeastern Minas Gerais, which is a poor and drought-stricken region. Their simple home, which is lent to them, has brick walls, ceramic tile floor and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. Zilma sporadically receives some financial help from her ex-husband and the family receives a small family allowance from the federal government. Giovana is affectionate and cheerful. She loves playing house and with dolls in the company of other girls her age. She has a dog she is passionately fond of. Giovana is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. She attends a local daycare center where she receives good care and supervision. She says that she will be a doctor when she grows up. The family is needy and through your support Giovana and her family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation, education and nutrition.
