Preventing Hunger in Honduras
Food scarcity is a serious problem in Honduras, and many children often go hungry.
For more than 30 years, ChildFund has worked in Honduras to help children in need and their families. With a population of 7.5 million, around 65 percent of whom live in poverty, one of the greatest challenges facing Honduran families is food insecurity. In many parts of the country, food is scarce, meaning parents cannot feed their children. Without nutritious food, children are more susceptible to illness, stunted growth and other problems.
With so many families living in poverty, conditions in Honduras are already difficult. However, the country's vulnerability to natural disasters further exacerbates food scarcity, and children often go hungry. Although the southern and western regions of Honduras are responsible for producing much of the basic crops the population relies upon as a source of food, these areas are often hit the hardest by flooding and droughts, making agricultural production and crop yields unpredictable.
One of the major side effects of food scarcity is malnutrition. According to the World Food Programme, malnutrition rates can be as high as almost 50 percent in rural areas. If children go without the nutritious food they need to develop, they are at greater risk of stunting, wasting and impaired cognitive development. This, in turn, can lead to later learning difficulties, which perpetuates the cycle of generational poverty.
To address these urgent problems, ChildFund established a child survival program in 12 south-central Honduran communities with funding from the United States Agency for International Development. This initiative aims to reduce child mortality not just caused by food scarcity, but other factors such as maternal health and access to health care.
There are many ways you can help us provide relief and support to families in Honduras. Our child sponsorship program enables you to provide food, medicines and other essentials to a child and his or her family living in Honduras. Just $28 per month will make a tremendous difference to a child living in poverty.
Another way to fight child poverty in Honduras is by becoming a monthly giving partner. Our Essentials for Survival fund helps families in the world's poorest countries, including Honduras, and provides families with access to clean water, nutritious food and potentially life-saving health care.
Finally, making a donation to our Emergency Action Fund allows us to provide aid to families affected by natural disasters. In Honduras, where droughts and flooding are common, this fund is vital in ensuring that families displaced by natural disasters have the resources and support they need to cope with these catastrophic events.
