World Bank Renewing Investment in Africa
Agriculture is a vital source of food and income for millions of African families.
For 75 years, ChildFund has worked in some of the world's poorest countries to fight child poverty and bring hope to children in need and their families. We are not alone in this cause, and, recently, the World Bank announced that it will invest approximately $4.5 billion in Africa, with the goal of eradicating poverty there by 2030.
Many of the funds that the World Bank is investing will improve land administration and provide greater support to small farms. Although agriculture is a leading driver of economic growth in many African nations, significant amounts of land are currently not being used. This, in turn, has resulted in missed opportunities for families who could potentially grow their own food and derive a source of income from the sale of surplus produce.
In a recent interview, Frank Byamugisha, a land specialist with the World Bank, said that reform of land administration policies in countries such as Rwanda and Ethiopia has been instrumental in reducing extreme poverty during the past 10 years. At present, less than 10 percent of agricultural land in Africa is documented, indicating that significant investment in administration could benefit millions of families.
