It rained and rained, and then the water rose and rose. Now, more than a million people are affected, and hundreds of thousands have lost their homes and livelihoods.
“We have lost everything. We have to rebuild our lives from the beginning,” says Sulosahana, a mother. “How will I take care of my child now?”
In fact, the children are the most vulnerable of all.
Malnourishment is a serious risk during times of significant food insecurity, as is disease: Clean water is scarce, and sanitation facilities have been swamped. Washed-out roads and bridges complicate meeting the most basic needs.
As families begin returning to the wreckage of their homes and communities, especially in the worst-affected district, Batticaloa, ChildFund is providing food and other immediate relief as well as rehabilitating schools, water sources and sanitation facilities. ChildFund also will provide supplementary food for mothers and infants, support families as they rebuild and ensure protective environments for children.
It’s a tremendous — and urgent — outlay of resources. And you can help. Simply dial 90999 on your mobile phone and text “RESPOND” to donate $10 to the ChildAlert Emergency Fund. This fund is designed specifically to allow ChildFund the flexibility to respond exactly when and where children need help the most.
When you text “RESPOND” to 90999, your tax-deductible donation of $10 will appear on your next cell phone bill, which you should keep among your records until tax time. You can text up to two or three donations per month, depending on your mobile provider. Thank you for responding.
