ChildFund Responds to Philippines Typhoon
Richmond, Va. – Nov.9, 2013 – ChildFund International is on the ground in the Philippines assessing the unprecedented damage and impact from Typhoon Haiyan, the biggest typhoon to have ever hit the Philippines. Reports indicate more than 17 million people are impacted.
“The last time I saw something of this scale was in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean Tsunami,” reported Rhodes Stampa of the UN OCHA. “This is destruction on a massive scale. There are cars thrown like tumbleweeds and the streets are strewn with debris.”
“Our teams are on the ground to conduct assessments of the damage,” said Katherine Manik, country director for ChildFund Philippines. “It’s challenging because of the communications outage in many of the hardest hit areas but we know there is a great need for support.”
The short-term goal is to provide for the immediate needs of those impacted. “We need to get food, water and basic household items to those in need,” Manik said. “We’re also providing child protection, including psychosocial recovery and safe spaces for children.”
ChildFund, which has worked in the Philippines for nearly 60 years, is working closely with its local partners and the government to respond.
ChildFund already has committed funds, but much more is needed. Funds will support those impacted, particularly children. To make a donation to assist those devastated by the typhoon, please visit http://www.childfund.org/emergency/.
