Diverse Roles, Single Purpose

It’s a remarkable task we’ve set for ourselves at ChildFund: to empower children living in extreme poverty. One of the most striking things about this work is the sheer diversity of roles it requires — in addition to the integral part played by our supporters, who make it all possible.

Our staff includes education specialists and number crunchers and graphic designers and grant writers. We have executive assistants who hold things together. We have technical experts who keep us connected. And never forget those nice people who answer the phones.

In the field, working directly with children and their families, there are teachers, and there are teachers of teachers. There are program health specialists, reproductive health specialists and child protection specialists. There are community facilitators and sponsor relations staff. There are locally based staff who work with communities to create opportunities for children — such as Kenya’s Marigat Integrated Primary School, featured in this month's ChildWire.

We’re all working together toward a single goal: to help children become leaders of enduring change. These efforts yield some fascinating stories that we share here in ChildWire, at ChildFund.org, on our blog and in our publications. What would you like to know more about? You can visit our Facebook page, “like” us and join the conversation, or simply send us a note.

Meanwhile, thank you for your commitment to empowering children. Enjoy this issue of ChildWire, and pass it along to a friend.

Seeing the Way Clear: Educating Blind Children

In areas where schools are barely equipped to meet the needs of sighted children, education is usually out of reach for blind ones. But not for Hillary and Helen. ChildFund joined forces with a community in Kenya to give them and others a chance to achieve their potential.

The Sponsorship Ripple Effect

Shalini, 18, isn’t the only one in her family to benefit from sponsorship. Her sister is in school, her parents are in business and her family is stable enough to weather a medical crisis.
