One of ChildFund’s major goals in Bolivia is to help mothers receive proper medical care before, during and after giving birth.

Childbirth can be an ordeal at the best of times, but for women living in Bolivia, it can pose a serious risk to their lives. Many mothers living in rural regions of Bolivia face great hardships in accessing even basic health care facilities, making childbirth dangerous. With 60 percent of the population living in poverty, improving maternal health is one of the greatest challenges facing aid organizations like ChildFund and the Bolivian health care system.

Lives in Danger

According to the World Bank, the child mortality rate is around 51 deaths per 1,000 live births, and in rural areas where access to health care is sporadic, it can be even higher. The leading causes — infection, hemorrhaging and other obstetric complications — of maternal mortality in Bolivia are preventable.

Even women who survive childbirth can often develop serious postpartum conditions like anemia. In parts of Bolivia where food is scarce, malnutrition is also a persistent problem, affecting the health of both mother and child.

Providing Access to Health Care

ChildFund works across Bolivia to improve access to medical facilities and ensure that mothers receive the care and support they need. One region where our initiatives have proven successful is the Villarroel Province in northwestern Bolivia.

Through our maternal and neonatal health programs, we have trained more than 100 birth attendants to assist mothers in labor. In addition, we support five 24-hour health centers in the Villarroel Province so expectant mothers have access to clinics that are adequately equipped to help them deliver their children safely. In cases of emergency, physicians are on hand.

Improving maternal health is one of ChildFund's biggest goals in Bolivia, and we need your help.
