It’s hard being a 15-year-old girl and living in poverty. When you look around at your friends who always seem to have more of everything than you do, it’s even harder. For Patricia, in Zambia, marriage seemed like an option that would bring her the life she dreamed of, and that’s how she came to marry at 15. In Patricia’s world, child marriage is not unusual, even though it’s illegal: 42 percent of Zambia’s women marry before age 18.

The better life she thought she would find turned out to be anything but. Not long afterward, though, ChildFund learned of her situation and intervened. Watch this video to hear Patricia’s story in her own words — and to see where she is now.
