Aris

Aris has learned to write well in English, thanks in part to his correspondence with his sponsor.

Nineteen-year-old Aristarcus, who goes by Aris, has always liked computers. He plays games on them during his free time, and he studies computer science in secondary school in Timor-Leste.

Aris lives with his father and two older siblings in Dili, Timor-Leste’s capital, during the week and visits his mother and five younger siblings in his hometown on weekends. He plans to study civil engineering in university. This dream probably wouldn’t be possible if he hadn’t been sponsored through ChildFund beginning in 2009.

His sponsor (whom Aris compares to a second mother because of her encouragement) supports his plans for continuing his education and, through their correspondence over the years, also helped Aris improve his communication skills.

“Some things have changed,” he says. “Before, when I received the letters from my sponsor, I was not really good at expressing myself. But now I can. I’m still trying to write letters in English. Since I started learning and practicing, my English has been improving.”
