Muhammed, a 20-year-old man from The Gambia, tells us in his words about how a sponsor’s encouragement and support helped him succeed in life. Today, he is studying to work in international diplomacy.

I had parents that were ready to do all it took to ensure that I had everything I needed: good health care, good education and safe drinking water.

But it was never an easy task, considering that I was competing with 11 siblings for limited resources. But things changed when Kaira Nyining Federation, ChildFund’s local partner in my community, intervened. In a sense, the federation became my second mum and dad by making sure I had what I needed.

In 2014, I was enrolled in ChildFund’s programs, and soon, I received a sponsor, whose name is Steve. From that day, until I aged out of sponsorship last year, Steve sent me gifts that paid for school lunches and helped me meet other financial needs.

I was even able to open a savings account, which allowed me to pay my first year’s tuition at the University of The Gambia.

Sponsorship also helped me with my other school expenses and let me participate in community and national programs. ChildFund always intervened in the areas that were the most vital, like education. They made a huge impact on my life.

Steve, my sponsor, means so much to me. How I wish I could see you and thank you in person. I have completed my undergraduate degree and am currently pursuing my master’s degree in international relations in Turkey.

I still remember the encouragement I received as a young person. When Steve picked me as his sponsored child, he changed my life. I am deeply indebted to you and ChildFund.
