Denis says he found his guardian angel when he was 8 years old. It was his sponsor, Brian, who would become a main source of moral support a year later when Denis’ father died. Denis and his mother and siblings were devastated, but Brian and his family showed their concern in several ways — including loving letters and help in starting a butchery in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

As the family struggled to cope with its new reality, misfortune struck once more; Denis’ mother was diagnosed with cancer. After receiving medical treatment, she recovered and is healthy today. Throughout it all, Brian’s monthly letters brought joy to Denis and his siblings, Alfonso and Inés. They felt they had a close friend.

As years passed, their mother traveled to find work, and Alfonso, the eldest child, took care of the family. Once Denis turned 18 and was no longer enrolled in sponsorship through ChildFund, Brian’s ties to the family were so strong that he decided to sponsor Inés, the youngest.

“With the help of my sponsor, I was able to overcome my sadness and problems — he changed my life,” Denis says. “I had the chance to get to know Brian and his family and felt very close to them, and sometimes I felt he was like a father to me. He watched me grow up through the pictures I sent to him; he was there when I was happy or sad, and he supported me in reaching my dreams.”

Today, Alfonso works as a dentist, and Denis and Inés are studying at a university. “I can only say thank you very much for everything, dear Brian,” Denis says. “I wish that the Lord will protect you and bless your family. Thanks for your support. As a result, I am a better person.”
