Giving Farmers in Timor-Leste a Helping Hand
Farmers in Timor-Leste do much of their work by hand.
Timor-Leste gained independence in 2002, but the country is still recovering from years of war and violence that plunged many people into poverty. Over the past decade, however, Timor-Leste has made substantial progress with the help of ChildFund and other global organizations. To help farmers living in rural Timor-Leste emerge from poverty and provide for their families, ChildFund has launched a project to give them vital agricultural equipment.
For some farmers in Timor-Leste, crop yields are not as high as they could be due to a lack of equipment. Heavy machinery like tractors are often out of reach for many farmers, and as a result, much of the work involved in harvesting, plowing, planting and harvesting has to be done by hand. Not only does this have a negative impact on how much food farmers can produce, it also reduces the potential income generated from the sale of surplus crops.
To address this problem, ChildFund launched a project to provide hand tractors to farmers in Timor-Leste. These machines enable farmers to maximize their productivity and work much more productively, enabling them to feed their families and receive higher yields, which can later be sold for additional income. To date, we are a little more than half way toward our goal of raising $6,000.
Letting Children Be Children
Hand tractors mean much more than just helping farmers work more productively. In some families, children must work in the fields to help their family survive, instead of going to school or even just enjoying playtime. By providing farmers with a hand tractor, children can work fewer hours in the field and enjoy being children.
When the project's goal is met, 20 farmers and more than 170 children in Timor-Leste will directly benefit. Support for this initiative has been strong, but we need your help to cross the finish line and ensure that farmers have access to the tools they need.
We need to raise an additional $2,525 to make this dream a reality for farmers in Timor-Leste, so please consider making a donation of any amount toward this goal. Every penny counts, and your generosity will have a lasting impact on not only the life of many children but also their families.
