Maria is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her mother, Viviane, in a rural community located in the Jequitinhonha Valley, northeastern Minas Gerais. Their simple home, which is rented, has brick walls, ceramic tile flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. The father has abandoned the home and has not been providing any type of financial support for his child. Viviane receives a small family allowance from the federal government, which is far from enough to meet basic needs. Maria is calm, affectionate and intelligent. She is also a studious girl. Her pet name is Vicki. She helps her mom by making the beds. Her favorite pastimes include playing tag and hide-and-seek. She has a dog and a cat she is fond of. Maria is considered to have good health. She attends a local public primary school and likes History. Her big dream is to become a veterinarian someday. The family is needy and through your support Maria and her family will have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
