Literacy is an important predictor of children’s academic success, and thus economic success. But studies show that 80 percent of lower-income children in the U.S. are not reading at grade level by fourth grade … which suggests that 80 percent of lower-income children will grow up to be lower-income adults, never achieving their potential. The generational cycle of poverty rolls on.

However, studies also show that reading for pleasure is more important for children’s educational success than their family’s socio-economic status.

But reading for pleasure is rare in the U.S.’s poorest communities, including those where ChildFund works. Children don’t have reading opportunities outside of school. There are no books in their homes, and their parents, many of them low-literate, don’t know the importance of reading.

ChildFund’s Just Read! Program is our response to these challenges.

In marginalized areas such as the Hispanic communities within Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, Just Read! is improving children’s lives and their abilities to get the most out of their educations.

When children have access to books, they feel more positive about reading.

Just Read! puts books directly into children’s hands, through lending libraries.

When children have more books, they read more books.

Children have a say in what books they get through Just Read! And at least 30% of the books are culturally relevant.

When children see themselves reflected in books — when they take journeys alongside characters they relate to, from their world or beyond …

… they imagine new possibilities for themselves. And they read more.

Book Buddies workshops help parents, big brothers and sisters and others create fun reading routines at home. Just Read! provides ongoing guidance and resources.

When parents read with their children, children read better, and reading becomes important and fun.

Families become more involved in their children’s learning — and more engaged with their children overall.

When children feel good about reading, they read more.

When children read more, they read better, and they learn better.

Their world becomes bigger, with more possibilities — now and for the rest of their lives.
