Richmond, VA – April 8, 2013– ChildFund International employees will go bare on Tuesday, April 16. Barefoot, that is.

April 16 marks One Day Without Shoes. This day encourages brave “soles” to spend the day barefoot to raise global awareness for children’s health and education.

“This event will spark conversation about the barriers to health and education that children face in developing countries,” says Cynthia Price, director of communications. “A pair of shoes can be the link to education and a determinant of long-term success and a healthier life.”

For thousands of children, growing up without shoes puts them at risk of injury, disease and soil-transmitted infections, and most don’t have access to medical care. A ChildFund study in 2010 estimated that 15 percent of school-aged children in developing countries have hookworm or another parasitic disease due to bare feet.

To celebrate the day at its Richmond-based headquarters, ChildFund is asking employees to go barefoot during the day. They’ll also participate in a Sole Fest, featuring ChildFund’s ODWS signature Best Pedicure and Best-Decorated Feet contests, as well as a Sole Train line dance.
