Richmond, Va. – July 17, 2013–Popular country music group Thompson Square will visit ChildFund International on Thursday, July 18, at 1 p.m. to meet ChildFund staff and share stories from their recent trip to Honduras, where the duo donated computers to a school and met with their sponsored child.

ChildFund has worked in Honduras since 1982. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America, and a quarter of its population – 7.5 million people – lives in extreme poverty, subsisting on only $1.25 per day. For Hondurans, obstacles to improving quality of life for children include environmental degradation, economic inequality, vulnerability to natural disasters and high levels of violence and crime.

In 2012, Thompson Square signed on to ChildFund’s LIVE! channel for which performing artists raise awareness about child sponsorship. For the past year, the husband-and-wife team has partnered with ChildFund to promote the nonprofit’s work in 30 countries. At each concert, Keifer and Shawna ask their fans to sponsor a child, hoping that their “celebrity” will help put a dent in the number of children who go every day without safe water, adequate nutrition, access to health care and more.

After meeting their sponsored child, visiting ChildFund programs and talking with the local children and their families, Shawna said her experience in Honduras “definitely makes you realize what is important in life, and it’s pretty obvious that it’s family.”

Following the meet and greet with ChildFund employees, the duo will play at Innsbrook After Hours later in the evening.
