Canada Aids Philippines Recovery Through ChildFund

MANILA, Philippines – Canada continues its support for the Philippines as response efforts to Super Typhoon Haiyan progress into early recovery initiatives. Through Christian Children’s Fund Canada, the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) is granting ChildFund CAD $950,000 for children’s education and protection, and for livelihood recovery in affected areas throughout the Visayas.

“ChildFund is grateful for the support of the Canadian government at this crucial time,” says ChildFund Philippines National Director Katherine Manik.

Canada’s support for early recovery in the Visayas will bolster ChildFund’s work, improving the protection of children in impacted areas and increasing their access to education. It will also spearhead development of new or alternative livelihood opportunities in disaster areas.

“The hard impact of the disaster may have passed, but the early recovery of affected communities will stave off the longer and subtler effects of the typhoon,” Manik says.

ChildFund was one of the first international NGOs to respond to Super Typhoon Haiyan, which affected 15 million Filipinos and killed more than six thousand. ChildFund distributed 500 metric tons of food and non-food aid into hard-hit communities in Tacloban, Palo, Tolosa, and Ormoc in Leyte, Bantayan in Northern Cebu, and Roxas City in Capiz.

Throughout the emergency response phase, ChildFund provided safe spaces for children in 13 locations, hosting psychosocial interventions for children of all ages, functioning as temporary learning spaces, and serving as the first point for child protection work in these communities.
