Maria Arlete is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her mother, Adelia; grandmother, Maria, and with two brothers, in a slum area on the outskirts of a city located in the state of Ceara. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has brick walls, rough cement flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. The father has abandoned the home and has not been providing any type of financial support for his children. Adelia is unemployed at this time. Maria receives a small old age pension, which is far from enough to meet basic needs. Maria Arlete is intelligent, affectionate and friendly. She helps her mom by running small errands. Her favorite pastimes include playing tag and hide-and-seek. She has a cat she is fond of. Maria Arlete attends a local public elementary school and her favorite subject is Math. Her big dream is to become a veterinarian someday. The family is needy and through your support Maria Arlete and her family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
