Catherine is a cheerful girl who lives with her parents, sister, and brother in the Eastern part of Kenya. They live in a two-roomed brick-walled permanent iron sheet-roofed house, which is not enough for the family. They fetch water from a communal borehole at a fee. Catherine’s family practices peasant farming where they grow maize and beans as food crops in a quarter-acre piece of land. Due to low rainfall and recurrent drought experienced in the area, the harvests are largely small. To supplement this, Catherine’s parents engage in casual jobs within the village where her mother washes clothes and her father engages in farm work in the neighbourhood. These casual jobs are very rare and when found, they are poorly paid; thus, meeting the family’s basic needs is an uphill task. The family has an average annual income of below US$420, which hardly meets the needs of the family. Catherine’s family learned of our program during a community meeting and approached the office for support. Catherine is in school. She enjoys playing basketball and assists in fetching water. Your contribution will be appreciated.
