Esther is a jolly girl who lives with her parents, sister, and brother in the Eastern part of Kenya. The family lives in a two-roomed brick-walled permanent iron sheet-roofed house. They use firewood as fuel for cooking. Her parents are not gainfully employed; hence, they depend on casual jobs within the village, such as tilling and fencing, to earn an income for the family. These jobs are rarely found and poorly paid, if at all. To supplement this, the family engages in subsistence farming where they grow maize and beans in a small piece of land. The area experiences recurrent droughts, and this adversely affects the harvests year in and year out. Water for household consumption is obtained from a communal borehole at a fee. The family’s average annual income is below US$420, which is insufficient to cater for their basic needs. During a community development meeting, the family was proposed for enrollment into the program. Esther is in school. She enjoys playing handball, and she assists in cleaning their house while at home. You are highly welcome in making a positive change to both Esther and her family’s lives.
