Jamel is a young boy who lives with his parents and sister in the Eastern part of Kenya. They live in a three-roomed brick-walled semi-permanent iron sheet-roofed house. They fetch water for domestic use from a communal borehole at a fee. Jamel’s family practices peasant farming where they grow maize and beans as food crops in an eighth-acre piece of land. Due to low rainfall and recurrent drought experienced in the area, the harvests are largely small. To supplement this, Jamel’s parents engage in casual jobs within the village where his father is a mason and his mother washes clothes for pay. These casual jobs are very rare and when found, they are poorly paid; thus, meeting the family’s basic needs is an uphill task. The family has an average annual income of below US$420, which hardly meets the needs of the family. Jamel’s family learned of our program during a community meeting and approached the office for support. Jamel is in school, and his performance is good. He enjoys playing football games and assists with simple household chores. Your contribution towards his well-being and that of his family will be greatly valued.
