Maria Thalita is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her parents, Erildo and Marilane, and with one younger sister, in a rural community located in the Jequitinhonha Valley, northeastern Minas Gerais, which is a poor and drought-stricken region. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has brick walls, rough cement flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. Erildo takes some odd jobs when available (he is unemployed at this time) and the family receives a small family allowance from the federal government; the total income, however, is hardly enough to meet basic needs. Maria Thalita is tranquil and shy. She helps with some small household chores. She likes playing soccer along with her friends. Maria Thalita attends a local public elementary school and her favorite subject is Portuguese. The family is needy and through your support Maria Thalita and her family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
