Lina is a young girl who lives with her single mother and one sibling in a suburb of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, in southern Africa. The region is characterized by tropical, warm and humid weather conditions that persist throughout the year. The neighborhood where Lina lives is densely populated with limited opportunities, and street vending is a major activity. Her home, which she built herself, consists of two bedrooms made of concrete blocks, a zinc sheet roof and a concrete floor. It has basic utilities such as running water and electricity. The family lives in deplorable conditions because the father slammed the door and walked out without looking back. The mother has taken on the additional role of provider and nurturer. She works tirelessly to provide for her child. Lina is currently enrolled in primary school and aspires to pursue a career in the medical field. The family has sought help from ChildFunds sponsorship program, where Lina will receive support in the areas of health, education, nutrition and recreation.
