Arthur is a young Brazilian boy who lives with his father, Lucindo, and paternal grandparents, Servulo and Maria, in a rural community located in the Jequitinhonha Valley, northeastern Minas Gerais. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has adobe walls, rough cement flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Electricity is available. Water is carried from a tank car that passes by their area on a regular basis. The parents have separated and the mother lives in another area. Lucindo is unemployed at this time. Both the grandparents receive small old age pensions; the combined income, however, is hardly enough to meet basic needs. Arthur is cheerful and affectionate. He helps his grandma by putting his toys away. His favorite pastimes include playing tag and hide-and-seek. He has a dog he is fond of. Arthur attends a public school and his favorite subject is Science. He dreams of becoming a veterinarian someday. The family is needy and through your support Arthur and his family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
