Vitoria is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her mother, Flavia; maternal grandparents, Jose and Ercilia, and with one brother, in a rural community located in the Jequitinhonha Valley, northeastern Minas Gerais. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has brick walls, rough cement flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Electricity is available. Water is carried from an artesian well. The father has abandoned the home and has not been providing any type of financial support for his children. Flavia does some subsistence farming when available and Jose receives a small old age pension. Vitoria is communicative, intelligent and affectionate. Her pet name is Vi. She helps her mom by washing the dishes. She loves playing house and ball games along with friends her age. She has a dog she is fond of. Vitoria attends a public school and her favorite subject is Math. Her wish is to be a schoolteacher when she grows up. The family is needy and through your support Vitoria and her family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
