Maria Taina is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her uncle, Francisco; aunt, Luciana, and with one cousin, on the outskirts of a small town located in the state of Ceara. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has brick walls, rough cement flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. The father did not acknowledge paternity and his whereabouts is unknown. The mother lives and works in another area. Francisco and Luciana work as day laborers in agriculture when available; the combined income, however, is far from enough to meet basic needs. Maria Taina is calm, shy and curious. She helps her aunt mostly by sweeping the floor. She loves playing house and with dolls in the company of other girls her age. She has a cat she is fond of, she attends a local public elementary school and her favorite subject is Math. Her big dream is to become a doctor someday. The family is needy and through your support Maria Taina and her family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
