Tawatchai Pratumlee or Lion is a poor boy who was born into a disadvantaged family that lacks of various opportunities in many ways. He lives with his paternal grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, uncle and younger sister. Farming is the way his family makes the living and the farmland they work on is his grandparents property which is a small plot. Due to the soil infertility, the rice crops are not of good quality and their farming is much dependent upon forces of nature; if it rained well, they might get sufficient crops to eat all year round but if it was drought, the crops might be damaged and this would throw his family into an extreme hardship, they have to buy rice for home consumption instead. His father and mother then go out to work as wage earners in other province to feed the family; yet, the family income is still lacking and insufficient for household expenses; as a result, the boy may not be allowed to get a decent education.
