Lorena is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her parents, Valdinei and Marinete, and with one younger brother, in a rural community located in the Jequitinhonha Valley, northeastern Minas Gerais, which is a poor and drought-stricken region. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has brick walls, ceramic tile flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. Valdinei takes some odd jobs when available and the family receives a small family allowance from the federal government; the total income, however, is hardly enough to meet basic needs. Lorena is calm and tranquil. She helps with some small household chores. She loves playing house and with dolls in the company of other girls her age. Lorena attends a public elementary school and loves Art. The family is needy and through your support Lorena and her family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
