Umaru is growing up with his single parent mother and siblings in a small farming community located near a running stream. The family dwells in a two bedroom mud bricks house roofed with old zinc that has some leakages especially during the rains. He sometimes suffers from common cold as a result of the leakage from the roof. He sleeps with his elder brother on a locally made wooden bed with a grass mattress with inadequate beddings. His mother works as a backyard vegetable gardener to take care of Umaru and siblings. The income earned is not enough to address their basic needs. He is attending the community pre-school in the nearby village, about 10 minutes away from their house. He enjoys the company of his elder brother who teaches him how to read small books.
