Walen is a boy who lives with his single mother and sibling in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique in southern Africa. The region is characterized by warm, humid weather almost year-round. In the neighborhood where Walen lives, the main activity is street vending. Despite its humble appearance, their self-built home has two bedrooms made of concrete blocks, a zinc sheet roof, and a concrete floor. It also has running water and electricity. The family has lived in deplorable conditions since the father left them. The mother was left with the added roles of provider and nurturer. She does everything she can to provide for her two children on her own. Walen attends elementary school and aspires to become an electrician. The family sought assistance from the ChildFund sponsorship program, through which Walen will receive support in the areas of health, education, nutrition, and recreation.
