ChildFund’s Afghanistan earthquake response:
Because children can’t wait.

[Richmond, Virginia – September 1, 2025] ChildFund is responding to the catastrophic 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan today (Kunar and Nangarhar), with highest priority on the needs of children, who too often fall by the wayside in emergency responses.

“Children caught in an emergency like this can’t wait,” says Radwa el Manssy, ChildFund’s director for Children in Crisis. “Every moment without protection or support adds to their distress. Our work begins the moment disaster strikes.”

While the full extent of the damage is unclear, ChildFund is preparing a child-focused response because children are the most vulnerable following disaster. Our partner in ChildFund Alliance, which has served children in Afghanistan since 2002, is assessing children's most urgent needs, including critical emergency relief and safe spaces amid the chaos.

Radwa el Manssy is available for interviews and can provide up-to-date information on the response.
