Joan is a young girl living with her grandparents and father in the eastern part of Uganda which is agricultural and savannah in nature. At home, they call her Base, which is her nickname, and she feels so proud. They live in a temporary shelter made of rough and dusty floors that pauses a threat to the Joan as she keeps suffering from flu and jiggers, this drains the family income through treatment. Joan does not sleep under a mosquito net, this exposes her to mosquito bites that cause malaria, and this affects their income.
