Maycon is a young Brazilian boy who lives with his parents, Raimundo and Gerlene, in a small agricultural community about 70 miles southwest of Fortaleza. Their simple home has brick walls, rough cement floors, and a clay-tiled roof. It is rented and has rudimentary sanitary facilities (cesspit). Running water and electricity are available. Raimundo works as an assistant carpenter and earns low wages. The per capita family income is about US$ 40.00 per month. The family is Catholic and their native language is Portuguese. Maycon is friendly and obedient. He is also a little shy. He runs small errands for his mom. His favorite pastimes include playing soccer and tag. Maycon is considered to be in good health. He attends a public primary school and his favorite subject is Portuguese. He wishes to be a truck driver when he grows up. He participates in the affiliated organization program where he and his family receive benefits like medical and dental care, nutritional evaluation, educational meetings and talks, school supplies and uniform, cultural activities, and home visits.
