Rossana is a young girl who lives with her parents in a community located on the outskirts of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, in southern Africa. The region is characterized by a hot and humid climate during most of the year. The neighborhood where the family lives is a cramped slum whose subsistence is based on street vending. Their self-built house, is made of concrete blocks sprinkled with cement, a zinc sheet roof, a rough concrete floor, with electricity and running water services. The surrounding fence is made of thorny climbing plants. Rossanas daily life is marked by sacrifices, as neither of her parents has a formal job to guarantee a steady income capable of providing her with stable food and nutrition. Her father is a handyman and her mother is a street vendor, whose income is uncertain and unable to meet even the most pressing household needs. Rossana is attending elementary school. To ease the childs pitiable situation, the family has sought help from ChildFunds sponsorship program, where Rossana will certainly receive support in the areas of health, education, nutrition, and recreation.
