Joao is a young Brazilian boy who lives with his mother, Sally, in a rural community in the interior of the state of Ceara. Their simple home has brick walls, rough cement floors and a clay-tiled roof. It is self-built and has a tiny bathroom. The father has never provided any financial assistance whatsoever. Sally takes some odd jobs as an unskilled laborer when available (she is unemployed at this time) and the family receives a small family allowance from the federal government. Joao is curious, intelligent and observant. He helps his mom by putting away items like toys and shoes. He likes playing with toy cars, balls and toy planes. He is fond of animals, especially dogs and cats. Joao has been diagnosed as suffering from autism spectrum disorder (he is under treatment with specialists). He attends nursery school and loves painting and coloring. Through your support Joao and his family will have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, education and nutrition.
