Portia is an intelligent girl who always wanted to become a medical nurse in her future. She lives with her mother and grandmother in a deprived community in the northern region of Sierra Leone. She has one brother. Her father lives in the capital city where he works as a commercial bike rider. Both her mother and grandmother are farmers. They plants different types of cash crops in a small piece of land far off from their community. The income raised in selling some of the harvested products is been utilized for food, clothing and school needs for Portia and sibling. This is insufficient for the family to attend to any emergency need of the home. They made an annual income of US$300. The family feed on one meal daily. They lived in an old mud house of three rooms which was left to them by the great grandfather of Portia who pass away many years ago. The house is roofed with old zinc and no sealing that leaks badly during the rainy season which makes them feels very uncomfortable especially at night. Portia sleeps with her grandmother on a local bed stuffed with elephant grass under a treated mosquito bed net.
