Kenya
With your support, ChildFund has helped kids in Kenya get a strong start in life since 1960.
Kenya is an independent republic bordered by the Indian Ocean. Considered the economic and transportation hub of East Africa, Kenya has shown tremendous economic resilience in recent years; even so, inflation, droughts and food shortages have presented many ongoing challenges for children. ChildFund Kenya works to ensure that even kids in under-resourced communities have what they need to survive and thrive.
Our Work in Kenya
Since 1960, ChildFund Kenya has worked to help children grow up healthy, educated, skilled and safe.
ChildFund Kenya works to ensure that every child grows up healthy, nourished and supported by a community that helps them thrive. With millions of young children affected by chronic and acute malnutrition, we provide families with access to essential health care, nutritious food, clean water and lifesaving medicines. Our programs also promote good hygiene, prevent diseases like malaria, and offer mental health support through safe, nurturing spaces. By addressing the root causes of health challenges and the ongoing impacts of crises such as drought or COVID‑19, ChildFund Kenya helps children build strong foundations for lifelong well-being.
ChildFund Kenya works to ensure that every child has access to a safe, inclusive and high‑quality education — one of the most powerful tools for ensuring lifelong well-being. Through our Education for Protection and Well-Being model, we support teachers and caregivers with the skills to prevent and respond to violence, creating school environments where children feel secure and supported. We improve learning conditions by building and renovating classrooms, providing desks and sanitation facilities, and expanding digital equity through computers, tablets and internet access. For children facing financial barriers, we offer scholarships that help them progress from primary school to higher education. We also champion girls’ education by addressing harmful cultural practices and fostering equitable learning environments. Working with partners, we strengthen literacy by distributing high‑quality learning materials, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
As children enter adolescence, our programs continue to build their skills and confidence, preparing them for safe, dignified work opportunities free from abuse or exploitation. We also support youth—and the adults around them—with the social and emotional skills needed to build healthy, nonviolent relationships at home, in school and in the workplace, ultimately strengthening their economic, physical and social well‑being.
ChildFund Kenya works to ensure that every child grows up safe from harm, recognizing that violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation threaten children across all communities and relationships — including online. Because violence is entirely preventable, we focus on strengthening the environments that shape a child’s daily life. We support families by promoting positive caregiving and improving their economic stability so they can consistently act in their children’s best interests. We mobilize communities to understand children’s rights, establishing child protection committees equipped to prevent and respond to violence. We also encourage children themselves to recognize their right to safety and to speak out against abuse, advocating alongside them for stronger protection policies at every level. Through this comprehensive approach, ChildFund Kenya works to shield children from abuse, exploitation, neglect and all forms of violence, helping them grow up confident, protected and able to reach their full potential.
