Maria is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her mother, Francidalva, and with two sisters, in a rural community located in the state of Ceara. Their simple home, which is lent to them, has brick walls, ceramic tile floor and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. The father has abandoned the home and has not been providing any type of financial support for his children. Francidalva works as a day laborer in agriculture and the family receives a small family allowance from the federal government. Maria is affectionate, cheerful and playful. She helps her mom by making the beds. She loves playing house and with dolls along with other girls her age. She has a dog she is fond of. Maria is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. She attends a local public school and her favorite subject is Portuguese. Her wish is to be a nurse when she grows up. The family is needy and through your support Maria and her family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
